Frequently Asked Questions about Coaching
---
What is ontological coaching?
Ontological coaching is a powerful methodology for effecting real change. It is effective because it is based on an understanding of the power of language, moods, and conversations for behavioral and cultural transformation.
Coping with change effectively and living a meaningful life have become central issues in our everyday lives. In many ways, Ontological coaching involves the balancing of our lives.
Ontology is the study of being, i.e., what it means to be human. Ontological coaching focuses on our "way of being," which is a dynamic interrelationship among three areas of human existence: language, emotions, and body. Way of being contains our often deep-seated perceptions and attitudes and is the underlying driver of our behavior and communication.
What is coaching?
Wikipedia defines life coaching as a practice of assisting clients to determine and achieve personal goals. A coach is defined as a person who supports people (clients) to achieve their goals, with goal setting, encouragement, and questions.
Is coaching the same as counseling?
Coaching is not counseling, consulting, or mentoring. While there are some similarities, there are differences that set coaching apart into its own category. Coaching is not about giving advice, telling people what to do, sharing opinions, diagnosing a problem, or teaching. It is not a clinical relationship, does not focus on the past, and is not about healing.
How can coaching help me?
Coaching is not for everyone. It’s for those looking to generate a change in their lives, whether it is personal or professional. Coaching in all three areas of language, emotions, and body can generate profound learning, resulting in fundamental shifts, both in self-perception and perception of what is possible in personal and professional life.
What happens during a coaching session?
During a coaching session we have a conversation. We may practice different ways of being present, of listening, of asking questions. On occasion there is homework that we will discuss.
How long will it take me to reach my goals?
The average coaching commitment is six months to one year. However, the actual amount of time is entirely dependent on the individual and his or her goals.
